While consumer awareness about the origins of food continues to rise, food manufacturers are clearly out of step with the times, fabricating even more fictional marketing claims than ever before, while omitting the most important and basic facts from product packages. This has led to widespread confusion in the supermarket.
It’s time to send food industry leaders a clear message: Just give us the important facts about our food and stop spreading confusion and misinformation with frivolous marketing claims! That’s why Free from Harm will soon be distributing a petition to claim our right to greater truth and transparency about the food we buy.
Biotechnology in our food supply
Consumers assume that food in their supermarkets has been raised via traditional farming methods and yet much of our food supply has been completely transformed by experimental biotech practices including nanotechnology and genetic engineering. We believe that products developed in this manner should be labeled accordingly! Furthermore, they should not be marketed as traditional, farm-raised products when in fact they are not. Let consumers decide whether they want to partake in these experiments—or not.
Animal factories replacing farms
Consumers expect meat and dairy products to come from animals raised on farms and yet an estimated 96% of these products come from factories, not real farms, that differ dramatically from consumer expectations. Proper labeling is critical to making healthy, rational and humane purchases!
Pesticides and other chemicals in our food
Consumers have the right to choose products that are free from pesticides or other chemicals that make it into our food supply yet these substances are more widely used than ever before and labeling is virtually nonexistent.
While the organic food movement emerged out of a necessity to protect consumers from many of these food safety concerns, organic food only represents approximately 1% of all food sold. Organic or otherwise, we must demand stricter, safer, and more humane choices that are also affordable.
Look for our petition coming soon!
