People ask a lot of questions about food: What does it taste like? How many calories does it have? And who cooked it?
One of the questions we need to ask (but rarely do) is, “Where did it come from?”
The disintegration and sterilization of our relationship with food is only one of the pressing topics that will be featured in a new PBS program called Nourish: Food + Community.
The show will be hosted by actress Cameron Diaz, whom some will remember as the spirited host of the green travel show “Trippin’” that aired on MTV.
Unlike many of the foodie shows on television today, which are little more than live-action recipe cards, Nourish will enlist food movement all-stars like Michael Pollan, Alice Waters, Jamie Oliver, and Anna Lappé to help audiences understand the impact of their food choices.
Just watching a show won’t solve what’s wrong with the food system, which is why the creators of Nourish have taken the program way beyond the screen.
A project of WorldLink, an Emmy Award-winning media group, Nourish is actually a multi-year media and education initiative enhanced by collaboration with more than 40 organizations dedicated to creating a sustainable food future.
Those who want to get involved with the Nourish initiative can check out the DVD for sale, middle- and high school curriculum materials, and a website intended to become a hub for information and action.
A series of free podcasts are also available at ITunes.
