Jonathan Safran Foer, acclaimed author of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Everything is Illuminated, and Eating Animals, expresses his support for BuyingPoultry.com, a free, comprehensive resource connecting good farmers with conscientious consumers. And remember, “good” farmers are those that allow chickens to live a few weeks of their life on pasture before brutally slaughtering them by stuffing them down a kill cone, pulling their necks through the other end, slitting their throats and allowing them to wrangle there until they bleed to death — all while fully conscious. And remember, these chickens are in their infancy / adolescence, typically seven weeks old in a lifespan of 10 to 15 years when their lives are drastically cut short and meet this violent end so that these “good” farmers can profit from their suffering and call this “high welfare” animal husbandry.
“Not sure what to say, other than how paradoxical it is that the person who motivated so many people to go vegan is telling us where to buy chicken.” “…Foer has (temporarily?) fallen off the fence and landed on the side of the happy meat/sustainable agriculture fence. Our side of the fence is jagged and full of mines. Where he now sits there’s green pastures, cool people, sunny skies, and rose-colored glasses to hide the suffering that we refuse to ignore.” from James McWilliams’ new blog post.
Thank you, James McWilliams, for bringing this video to our attention.

I don’t get this I really don’t believe that anything can be good if it ends in the senseless murder of a living being ” Violence begets violence” there is no exception to this rule…..
Agreed!
I presume he is doing this as it might cut down a certain amount of suffering in that the chickens are not packed together as on a factory farm, but then if people really are asking him what should they eat, why dosn’t he just tell them about the assortment of fake meats they could have instead.
This is a concern, supporting welfare, eg, Animal Aid in the UK have , among their many campaigns, recently done one to make it mandatory to have CCTV in all slaughterhouses and this would be made available to certain organisations to monitor, and have been successful to a degree in that all major supermarkets have now said they will only buy meat from s/houses that have CCTV. This may very well reduce the illegal cruelty, but will this make people think it’s OK to eat it, that it’s all humane? Animal Aid probably thought hard about this as they are a totally vegan and abolitionist organisation, and that decided it was best to do something that may cut down on the worst excesses of cruelty and violence whilst people continue to use animals.
Very disappointing. It’s never right to promote someone’s death.
So, wait – it was all about the money? Safran Foer rode the growing veg wave just to sell books? I’m more nauseous now than I was when I first read his account of hog slaughter. Jeezus. My character-judging capabilities must be off. I thought this was actually a guy with conviction and integrity, but instead he was muching on McNuggets while writing Eating Animals.
Right on. I was doubtful of Safran Foer from the first time I saw him interviewed on The Ellen DeG show!
This is so unbelievably disheartening. Growing up forces you to come to terms with the fact that politics and corporations and holidays and everything else in between are really only facades constructed out of greed.
I wish sell outs like Safran Foer would simply stay away from truly important and innocent causes such as animal liberation. By condoning “happy meats” he is only serving to widen the gap between the average blinded consumer and people who are actually trying to bring awareness to something as important as the slaughtering of the innocent.
It’s incredibly appropriate that user comments were disabled on this YouTube video. Safran Foer cashed his check and hopefully bought himself something that makes him really happy like a bad ass new car, without having to deal with the public backlash. Another one bites the dust.
Love your comment!
