Lucinda, our latest rescue found last month on the brink of starvation, has been rehabilitating at the home of one of our rescue heroines, Melissa Summer Pena. Lucinda’s getting stronger and healthier each day, and as she progresses, her personality is really starting to blossom. She’s taken quite a fondness for Melissa, following her all around the house and talking to her all the while. And she’s even taken to one of Melissa’s dogs, Travis! “The funny thing is that Travis is severely dog aggressive but would never even think to hurt a small creature or human. When I first turned around, Lucy was cuddled up right next to Travis’s body but then he adjusted his leg and she moved, says Melissa.” Read more about Lucinda’s rescue.

If you would like to help Lucinda and birds like her, please consider making a donation. We rely exclusively on donations like yours to fund our programs, including chicken rescue and care. By personalizing each rescued bird as a unique and complex individual, we break down harmful stereotypes and attempt to awaken empathy. Our storytelling, photos and videos provide an intimate glimpse into each individual bird’s personality, as well as the horrors of the egg and chicken meat industries. Many people will never have an opportunity to visit a sanctuary in person. A “virtual visit” is the next best thing, providing a powerful way for potentially millions of people to reconnect with animals.
