- Farm to Fable: The Fictions of Our Animal-Consuming Culture, is a presentation based on Grillo's new book of the same name that explores the question: why, in an age when we could make other choices and with all the good reasons to follow a vegan lifestyle, do most of us continue to consume animal products? The reason is two-fold. First, the beliefs about consuming animals has remained largely unexamined and therefore unchallenged. Second, the fictions of popular culture continually reinforce those beliefs through every possible media and social touchpoint. This presentation is in three parts. The first part explores how these fictions operate as a form of propaganda over the public. The second part looks at a sample gallery of fictions from our everyday lives. And the final part explores what a better understanding of these fictions means to animal advocacy.
Robert Grillo is the director of Free from Harm which he founded in 2009 to expose the food industry’s exploitation of animals and foster greater empathy for farmed animals. As an activist, author and speaker, Grillo focuses awareness on the animal’s experience and point of view, drawing on insights from sociology, psychology,
popular culture, ethics and social justice to bridge the gap between humans and other animals. As a marketing communications professional for over 20 years, Grillo has worked on large food industry accounts where he acquired a behind-the-scenes perspective on food branding and marketing.
